Rap music was introduced in the eighties, it has changed since then. Funkmaster Flex and Sugarhill Gang are considered to be the pioneers of rap music and Curtis Blow its godfather. Rap music brought in with it a new culture. Wearing jogging suits, kangol hats, and big gold chains, bandana, wrist bands was considered cool. It also ushered in the new style of dancing called breakdance. Rappers such as Curtis Blow and Run DMC composed rap songs that had very catchy beats and fun to listen to. Public Enemy created songs that made people socially conscious and think deeply. Every song contained a message, so no one can accuse them of providing fluff. They are one of the most respectable rap groups and have maintained this stature for more than two decades. Some of the rap songs also became the topic of controversy and often faced the ire of parents as they claimed that it corrupted the innocent mind of children and youngsters. Rap as a musical genre has been around for nearly 30 years. During this period it has transformed to a multi-billion dollar industry from being just a street fad. The list below provides samples of rap song from the bygones to the present. Sugarhill Gang’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’ became instantly popular. It was the first rap song that climbed to the top 40 spot on the US pop charts. This happened in 1979 when rap music was being dismissed as fad. This song gave rap music the necessary breakthrough. ‘Lose yourself’ by Eminem is one of the greatest rap song of all times. No rapper has dominated the rap music charts like Eminem in this millennium. Superstar Run DMC’s ‘King of Rock’ easily qualified for the top 10 all time great rap songs. This rap group is capable of having even six entries in the top rap music charts of all times. It was this group that took rap to a new wave of popularity. Tupac Shakur’s ‘California Love’ contained poetic rap music. I was a big hit on the rap music charts and is still a regular on mainstream radio stations. Beastie Boys ‘Fight for your right’ is one of the best songs created by this group and managed to score high in the rap music charts. The Beastie Boys is one among the few of the white rap groups who gained long-term respect from the industry. Rap music charts although controversial at times have created a niche for themselves. Its beat and lyrics continue to grab the attention of the public especially the young.
